Self-Leadership: taking responsibility without being a manager

At first glance, “self-management” sounds like a big word. In everyday work life, it mainly means keeping track of your own tasks, managing yourself effectively, setting priorities, making decisions, and taking responsibility for your own work.

At empiriecom, we believe it’s important for people to take charge of their own work. That doesn’t automatically mean leadership becomes unnecessary, since it can be viewed from different perspectives: leading oneself, leading others, and being led. Self-leadership is the starting point, because those who can lead themselves well also lay a solid foundation for leading others.

Self-management doesn't work on its own
For working independently to work, it must be clear where your own boundaries lie. What can I decide on my own? When should I bring someone else in? Where can I get information if I get stuck?
At empiriecom, expectations and points of contact should be clear, while at the same time there should be enough freedom to make your own decisions. Self-management doesn’t mean having to do everything on your own.
And yes, things can go wrong sometimes. When you make decisions and try new things, you’re bound to make mistakes. For us, what’s more interesting than who made a mistake is what we can learn from it and how we can do things differently next time.

Self-management can therefore take many different forms. At its core, it’s about effectively managing yourself, taking charge of your own tasks, moving things forward, and making decisions when you can make them on your own. It’s just as important to know when it makes sense to bring someone else in.
